Censorship History

UK 1975: Passed X (18) after BBFC cuts for UK 1975 cinema release UK 1998: Passed 18 after 18s of BBFC cuts for UK 1998 Exploited VHS. Cut to remove shots of bloodstained breasts from the gutting of a woman’s body during the climax of the film.

US: The cut US R Rated version omits a scene of Ezzra Cobb scooping out a corpse’s brains with an ice cream scoop.

Promotional Material

Real-life Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein inspired many distinguished films, including Psycho , The Silence of the Lambs and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre , but none is quite as disturbing as Deranged .

Roberts Blossom gives an alarmingly convincing performance as rural eccentric Ezra Cobb, whose mother’s death unhinges him to the point where he not only lovingly preserves her corpse in the living room but also goes out to find ‘friends’ to keep her company not all of whom are dead when he finds them! Perversely, Ezra’s more worried about what mother would say about his various activities than he is about the prospect of being found out. Indeed, like Gein, he’s cheerfully open about his activities when visiting friends, but no-one believes him.

Like Carnival of Souls and The Honeymoon Killers , this is one of American horror cinema’s great one-offs, an eerie, genuinely unsettling but also darkly comic experience.

Special Features:

  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation of the unrated version, featuring the infamous brain-scooping scene , available uncut in the UK for the first time!

mainiac 2012 Maniac is a 2012 France/USA crime horror by Franck Khalfoun.
With Elijah Wood, America Olivo, Sammi Rotibi. YouTube icon IMDbIt has now been passed 18 uncut for strong bloody violence for:

  • UK 2013 cinema release

Perhaps a notable uncut rating as the response from film festival screenings was that it was very likely to be cut.

The film has also been mentioned as a possible first victim for the BBFC’s change of guidelines on the subject of violence and sexual violence. The BBFC listed an extended set of factors to be taken into account when considering sexual violence. The press release about the change of rules gave few clues about the practical effects of the rule change, so hopefully the uncut release of Maniac is an indication that the rules haven’t “tightened up” quite as much as the tabloid press suggested.

There seem to be two running times noted for the film, 89 and 93 minutes. However uncut festival screenings were amongst those noted as 89 minutes so perhaps just technical differences on how it is projected.

Airplane Blu ray Region Free Robert Airplane! is a 1980 USA comedy by Jim Abrahams and David Zucker and Jerry Zucker
With Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty and Leslie Nielsen. YouTube icon IMDb

The film has just been passed 12A for moderate sex references and drug use for an upcoming cinema release.Previously it was A and PG rated for its 1980 cinema release and for VHS video releases.

Then the 2001 DVD release was inflated to 15.

Now it has been deflated back down to 12A.

Perhaps the BBFC can’t make up their minds what to do about pervy pilot Peter Graves. Eg when he asks a young lad if he has ‘ever seen a grown man naked?’.

Beyond Blu ray Stuart Gordon From Beyond is a 1986 US horror film by Stuart Gordon.
With Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton and Ted Sorel. YouTube icon IMDbUK: The Director’s Cut was passed 18 uncut for:

There is also a US release

Censorship History
UK: The cut Theatrical Version was passed 18 without BBFC cuts for:

  • UK 1987 cinema release.

See pictorial cuts details from movie-censorship.com . The film had suffered 1:05s of MPAA cuts:

  • The scene that upset the MPAA the most—and as I describe it, it is truly disgusting—is when Jeffrey Combs’ character’s pineal gland has gone out of control and he’s hungry for brains. He attacks a psychiatrist, played by my wife [Carolyn Purdy-Gordon], and he plants his mouth onto her eye socket and starts sucking. And the material that was cut out was when he actually sucks her eyeball out, spits it onto the floor and the eyeball lands looking back up at him and he continues to suck her brains through the eye socket and the camera pushes in. It’s really disturbing and it’s the longest restored piece; my guess is it’s about 30 seconds or so. I think it’s the most horrific moment in the whole movie.

UK: The cut Theatrical Version was passed 18 after a further 10s of BBFC cuts for:

  • UK 1991 VCI VHS
  • UK 1987 Vestron VHS

The BBFC cuts were:

  • The monstrous Pretorius rips Katherine’s shirt off
  • followed by the molesting of Katherine’s breast by Pretorius

UK: The Director’s Cut was passed 18 uncut for this 2013 release
