UK: The Definitive Restoration Version was passed 12 uncut for moderate gory horror for:

See article from blog.hammerfilms.com , February 2012: Restored

Thanks to the efforts of a fan based in Japan, Hammer Films finally acquired the surviving footage from the extended cut in 2011 for inclusion in a forthcoming definitive restoration. The film contained a number of extended scenes, among them a shot of Dracula tearing his face off during the disintegration climax.

We have reviewed the restoration of the Japanese footage to Dracula. It was incredibly exciting to see the two long-lost moments in the context of the BFI’s restoration.

Molinare have done a superb job restoring this footage, considering the state of the reels (you’ll be able to compare and contrast on the eventual Blu-ray; we’re going to release all four surviving Japanese reels unrestored as a single extra).

The moment where the Count leans-in over Mina is full of transgressive threat and erotic charge (one can easily see how this moment had to be cut in 1958) though the footage does not actually include a bite (contrary to wishful thinking in some quarters).

The face-clawing scene is truly magnificent and sits perfectly within the last few seconds of the film.

Note that although extra material was re-inserted, other less important material was dropped to preserve the running time, and hence keep the audio track in sync.

The restore film will include the eyeball scene — restored from a reel of a print housed at the BFI then integrated into the main restoration, which was scanned from a Warner Bros I/P — though not the head in acid bath scene, which despite our best efforts appears no longer to exist.

See  article from  blog.hammerfilms.com : A note on the restoration, mastering and authoring

Some reviewers have commented that the DVD is better quality than the BD. As both have been transferred from the same source, this simply cannot be the case, however the DVD may in some circumstances appear to look better due to upscaling if watched on an HD screen, as this may be creating a sharpening effect. The BD clearly shows more grain and edge definition.

In addition, the HD encode, due to its higher resolution, shows more of the artefacts present in the source material, including softness, grain and high contrast. The SD encode may appear to look smoother as these artefacts are less visible. Finally, there are multiple user-defined and screen-specific settings that affect the way a picture displays on any given TV or computer screen.

Overall, the quality of the picture is dictated by the quality of the source material, and by the decisions taken to retain grain and not to apply filters. We are more than happy with the final result and feel that it properly reflects the work and care that went into the restoration process.

Rasputin Monk Double Play Blu ray Rasputin: The Mad Monk is a 1966 UK drama by Don Sharp.
With Christopher Lee, Barbara Shelley and Richard Pasco. See IMDb

UK: Unconfirmed BBFC details for:

  • UK 2012 Studio Canal RB Blu-ray/R2 DVD Combo at UK Amazon released on 22nd October 2012

Summary Review: Pretty Good

The movie chronicles the events of history’s man of mystery, Rasputin. Although not quite historically accurate and little emphasis is put on the politics of the day, Rasputin’s rise to power and eventual assassination are depicted in an attempt to explain his extraordinary power and influence.

Noted for stunning visuals on a small budget and a good score but otherwise an average Hammer horror. Entertaining enough but won’t stand up to repeated viewing.

Censorship History

Passed X (16) then 15 after BBFC cuts for:

  • UK 1999 15 rated Warner VHS
  • UK 1995 15 rated Lumiere VHS
  • UK 1991 15 rated Castle VHS
  • UK 1966 X rated cinema release

From IMDB. The BBFC cuts were:

  • the Rasputin/Sonia love scene was shortened to end on the shot of Rasputin tearing open the back of Sonia’s dress. The uncut version continues the scene for another 20s climaxing as she gets into bed and Rasputin pulls the blanket off her (unseen) naked body.
  • Two shots were shortened in the scene in which Peter is disfigured by acid in order to remove close shots of Peter’s scarred face.

Hammer films in 2012 are appealing for information about lost footage from:

  • an extended fight scene, saying that it was definitely filmed, but there is no known surviving materials. Film restorers have noted a  burning log, that suddenly appears on the stone floor toward the end of the fight between Rasputin and Ivan (Francis Matthews),  a clear indication that there is definitely footage missing from this final fight
  • Also for footage from a scene depicting the suicide of Sonia, if it was ever filmed.

  • UK 2012 Hammer/Studio Canal Restored Version [with Corrected Audio Synch] R2 DVD/RB Blu-ray at UK Amazon for re-release on 30th April 2012

It is widely reported that the master used for March 2012 release exhibits audio sync errors of up to 1 second. this is apparent on both Blu-ray and DVD disks and seems to be most obvious during the first 15 minutes of the film. This is now corrected for a re-release on 30th April 2012.

  • UK 1993 15 rated Lumiere VHS
  • UK 1992 15 rated Warner VHS
  • UK 1966 X (16) rated cinema release

The BBFC cuts were:

  • A close-up of blood coming out of the stake in Barbara Shelley’s chest has been removed – in the censored print loss of soundtrack has been bridged with an additional reaction shot of Francis Matthews against the wall which appears to be the taken from another shot of him in this position but at a slightly different speed
  • After Dracula cuts open his chest, about 5s-10s of footage of Susan Farmer gradually coming closer to him has been removed presumably on the grounds that this makes it clearer that she was going to drink the blood on Dracula’s chest. The offscreen shout which ends Dracula’s advances appears against a different on-screen image in the cut version (because the original footage is missing) after not before Farmer has fainted

Update: Restored Titles

8th February 2012. See article from blog.hammerfilms.com

On the subject of main and end titles. Both our restoration partners and ourselves are doing everything we can to ensure that Hammer films are restored from the very best available materials. Often these materials are of the US rather than the UK version, which leads to a search for viable first and last reels so that the UK titles can be restored.

Dracula: Prince of Darkness was restored from an original cinema negative featuring US main titles but UK end titles. Using the first reel of a badly-damaged print as a source, Pinewood Studios have done a fantastic job restoring the original UK main titles, meaning that the final restored film has UK titles at the beginning (Associated British Productions Limited Presents // A Hammer Film Production) and the end (A Hammer Film Production produced at Bray Studios, England // Released through Warner-Pathe Distributors Limited).

Studio Canal and Hammer plan further restorations on such films as George Gilling’s The Plague of The Zombies and The Reptile.

Notice from StudioCanal UK regarding faulty Dracula Prince Of Darkness Blu-ray/DVD Double-Play discs:

We recently discovered a small audio synch issue within a couple of scenes of the Dracula Prince Of Darkness discs that were released on the 5th of March.

This problem occurred at the authoring stage where a fix was not implemented despite being supplied.

With this in mind we will be replacing any discs that have this issue present.

Please send your proof of payment and your address to enquiries@vdcgroup.com and we will endeavour to send a working replacement to you promptly.

Update: Further improvement to be added to replacement disks re audio synch error

21st March 2012. See article from blog.hammerfilms.com

The center sequence in the opening flashback scene of the film is from the 4-perf negative of DRACULA aka HORROR OF DRACULA. That film was shot on the full 35mm frame and intended to be screened at 1.66:1. To make it all fit together, the filmmakers reduced the size of the flashback scene from DRACULA and added a diamond-shaped smoke-effect mask. The result is that there’s a real issue with the grain: it is very tight and crowded due to the shrinking of the 1.66:1 image. In addition, the overlay of the larger and more exaggerated grain of the 2-perf smoke effect creates all sorts of problems once the image is digitised and compressed.

We did some research and have found an alternate encoding software package that will enable us better to tweak the opening sequence and create an improved encode. We have already completed several tests, and although it’s not perfect (it never could be, due to the workflow from 2-perf OCN to encoded Blu-ray) we feel that we have obtained a better result with less posterization. StudioCanal will replace this scene on the revised discs (with sound synch corrections) which will be available in April. We hope you like it!
